By connecting two Macs together with Target disk mode, you can browse and open your files stored on the target startup disk. Target disk mode is a boot mode that makes the target Mac's startup disk work like an external hard drive on another Mac computer. On M1-based Macs, you initiate Target Disk Mode using a command in the Recovery app’s Utilities menu: Share Disk. I was able to force an unmount and could wipe the disk. Expand the newly added disk, and set Disk Provisioning to Thin provision if desired. If the computer is off, start it up while pressing and holding the T key.
